Investigating how maritime change is reshaping health, safety, security and environment

Why UNWME Exists

Maritime operations are changing rapidly. New technologies, cargoes and fuels, climate pressures, geopolitical uncertainty and evolving regulation are reshaping the conditions in which the industry operates. Knowledge, standards and practice do not always evolve at the same pace. This can create areas of concern that deserve closer attention. UNWME exists to examine these developments, bring together relevant expertise and contribute to a better understanding of their implications for maritime health, safety, security and environment.

Our Ambition

UNWME is developing toward an independent maritime research foundation focused on emerging issues in maritime HSSE. Our ambition is to combine research with operational knowledge and expert dialogue: identifying questions that deserve investigation, examining them from different perspectives and sharing findings that can contribute to safer and more resilient maritime operations. The future foundation will be built around a governance and funding model designed to protect the independence of its research.
