Maritime Business Series
The Maritime Business Series (MBS) is a structured publication series developed by UNWME to address key operational and risk challenges within the maritime industry.
Combining real-world experience with the PRISM-M methodology, the series provides practical guidance to support safer, more consistent and more transparent decision-making across vessel, cargo and port operations.
Each publication focuses on a critical risk domain within the maritime industry, combining:
- Operational experience from ship and shore
- Cargo-specific risk knowledge
- Safety and HSSE frameworks
- Governance and decision-making considerations
Integrating vessel, cargo and port risk into consistent and defensible maritime decision-making.
The series is underpinned by the PRISM-M methodology (Pro-active Risk Integrated Safety Management – Maritime Industry), which promotes a proactive and integrated approach to risk across the vessel–cargo–port interface. This ensures that the content of the series is not only descriptive, but also supports consistent, transparent and defensible decision-making in real-world operations.
The 2026 series will address key areas of concern, including:
- The correct interpretation of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and its impact on safe cargo handling
- The effects of climate change on containerised cargoes and voyage risk exposure
- Integrated vessel–voyage–cargo risk assessment and management
- The behaviour and risks of bulk cargoes, including dynamic separation and liquefaction
Through this series, UNWME aims to contribute to a more resilient, informed and aligned maritime industry, where operational realities, safety considerations and business responsibilities are effectively integrated.
The Maritime Business Series is intended not only as a source of knowledge, but as a foundation for dialogue, standardisation and continuous improvement across the global maritime community.
